I was chatting via email with Tim Stone, wordsmith extraordinaire, about AI development. Since I know he’s a fan of wargames I dropped a single prompt into ChatGPT to demonstrate the latest AI capabilities.
It created Cyprus 1974, a somewhat flawed yet also incredibly playable and credible wargame. This isn’t my genre, to play or design, so I’m not the right person to properly assess it.
It has though provoked a thoughtful response from Tim on his excellent gaming site. Have a read, share your thoughts there.
Personally I’m in complete agreement with him: the games industry (as with Corporate IT, whether at small companies or global companies) is going through disruptive transition right now. Jobs and roles are changing, the required skills are changing, the pace of change is significantly accelerating and getting it wrong may be existential for any company, but especially game studios.
Interesting times.
